Last Sunday I tried to reflect on how we might approach the future calmly and realistically. I will jot down a summary of my thoughts and publish them in a series of bullet points next weekend in BE Alive, so that we can all have something in writing for future reference.
I concluded by indicating that there are two areas where we can immediately reinforce our pastorally effectiveness.
One is to ensure that everyone who falls ill will be cared for with the sacraments and so I would like to meet all the Ministers of Holy Communion this TUESDAY EVENING IN THE FISHER-MORE HALL AT 7.30PM. (If you are unable to make this meeting, please inform the office.)
I would also like to have some more people involved in Funeral Ministry. This is a most rewarding ministry and of immense help to me.
Anyone wishing to know more and willing to take part in the necessary training, please get in touch with me.
Redemptorist Publications have commissioned me to write an altar server’s manual in the Freddie Freckles series and I am drafting this at present. At the same time, I have invited the children who made their First Communion last year to consider whether this is a ministry to which they may wish to commit themselves.
Application forms are at the school, but for children not at Bishop Eton and who wish to become servers, please go directly through the office.
Furthermore, at the end of next month, Archbishop Malcolm is coming to ordain Tim King (from the Focolare Movement) to the diaconate. It would be good if we could train a small group of servers for the occasion. Any servers who are interested, please contact the office.
In a fortnight we have a designated Sunday for the Synod. At the same time we also have two Dominican Priests preaching their foreign mission appeal, so we will have to organise ourselves to ensure that you are fully informed of all that is happening and to that end our Synod reps will meet in the coming week.

Marriage Matters Reflections for this week
A Reflection from Marriage Matters (www.twoinoneflesh.org.uk) for this Sunday
Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Amos 6:1, 4-7; 1 Tim 6:11-16; Luke 16:19-31)
Beware of complacency and compensating
Today we are warned about being complacent. Too often, we think everything is fine in our lives and then we realise we’ve drifted apart and feel isolated from our spouse; the atmosphere is strained; it is lonely in bed. The danger is to compensate with activities outside our marriage instead of sitting down, holding hands and getting back together again.

Family Groups 2nd October 2019:
There will be an open, informal meeting to find out more about Family Groups and how this Ministry of Welcome can support a parish community. Like a natural family, Family Groups are made up of people of all ages and circumstances who simply commit to meet regularly and get to know each other better. The groups are linked by a common faith bond but are not exclusive to Catholics.
Family Groups do not replace other groups in the parish but help their members develop genuine friendships and support networks and to build a sense of community in the parish and a sense of parish in the community.

The Marie Curie Helper Service is Recruiting
The Marie Curie Helper service recruits, trains and supports volunteers to support terminally ill people (defined as anyone with any terminal illness, not just cancer) who are in the last 12 months of life.
This support follows the terminally ill person wherever they are, whether it be in their own home, hospice, hospital or nursing home. Our volunteers provide companionship, emotional support, practical support, provide a break for carers, information giving and signposting.
The support may be face to face (which it normally is) or could be by telephone if the person isn’t up to a physical visit. The same volunteer will then sometimes provide bereavement support for that person’s carer or loved one for up to 3 months after death.
This is an amazing service with incredible volunteers. Marie Curie is now recruiting more volunteers. If you or anyone you know has any questions about the service or wishes to know more, please do not hesitate to give Jan the Volunteer Coordinator a call on 0800 304 7402 or 07928 525611

Advice from the NSPCC
Mental Health Awareness
“The Hub of Hope is the world’s first of its kind mental health database bringing grassroots and national mental health services together in one place for the first time ever.
Using the location of web browser or mobile devices, the cloud-based web application allows anyone, anywhere to find the nearest source of support for any mental health issue, from depression and anxiety to PTSD and suicidal thoughts, as well as providing a ‘talk now’ button connecting users directly to the Samaritans.
It is currently the biggest and most comprehensive resource of its kind, with more than 1,200 validated support networks already registered on the web app and this number increasing each day. I
t has been endorsed by the Samaritans and 25 other national mental health support organisations and trusts. It already has a proven record of providing support to thousands as a vital stopgap for those on the five to six month NHS waiting list for mental health referrals.”

From Fairshare Today in the UK 8.4 million people are living in food poverty. At the same time, thousands of tonnes of edible food are going to waste. At least 270,000 tonnes of this surplus food comes from the food and drink industry and this equates to 650 million meals.
FareShare are tackling food waste and fighting hunger. We are on a mission to get as much of this surplus food from around the UK to charities and community groups to make it into meals for vulnerable people.
Could you help us? We are looking for volunteers to join our fantastic team at our Merseyside regional centre based in Speke. We need warehouse assistants and drivers to pick, pack, stack and distribute food. Our warehouse is open Monday-Friday, 9.00am – 5.00pm but you can volunteer at times to fit around you.
